Snug as a bug

Another drop of snow, another day where the country falls apart.

The only saving grace with yesterday’s snowfall was that I wasn’t at work. To be honest, as much as I love the snow, I’ve been getting pretty pissed off that for the last few years the worst snow has always fallen whilst I’ve been at work and it has taken me hours to get home. So it was with a sense of quiet satisfaction that I watched the garden turn white knowing it was somebody else’s turn.

I was reminded  of the selfishness of some people a few years ago when I lived in another part of town. We were at the end of a cul-de-sac which was on a hill. About 12 households clubbed together and bought a pallet of rock salt, we ended up with two bags each.

One day I woke up and the snow had fallen. A couple of us got our bags of rock salt and started spreading them all over the cul-de-sac, far and wide, across other drives and the carriageway.

One of the other neighbours came out, we exchanged good mornings and he appeared with his two bags of rock salt. I watched him cut the corners off  one bag, he then proceeded to walk a track from his offside wheel up his drive, onto the road and up the cul-de-sac to the top of the hill. It was like he was laying a trail of gunpowder. He then returned to his drive, got the second bag and made a parallel track from his nearside wheel, up the drive, onto the road and to the top of the hill.

Me and the other neighbour then watched in disbelief as he got in his car and drove up his tracks of salt and off into the distance leaving us with no salt left as we’d shared it over the whole area.

Fortunately, we moved out soon after so didn’t have much to do with that guy. I don’t suppose he would have been particularly neighbourly.
