Make mine a bonus ball

Lady Tottingham, I mean Chief Constable Sue Sim of Northumbria Police, is creating something of a stir in the force with some of their restructuring. When I say restructuring I of course mean, getting rid of jobs and saving cash.

The force has to lose 318 officers and 825 civilians in efforts to save £57million by 2013.

One of the plans to sort out who does what is for people who want the role, or want to stay in the role, of detective  to go into a big hat and be drawn out  a la National Lottery style.

The chief has decided that the fairest way to allocate the over subscribed detective roles is to pick people randomly. This would also have the coincidental by-product of saving money and time by going through all the tedious selection and interview processes.

This forward thinking and dynamic decision making  must be why Sim got a £33,000 bonus last year (the largest bonus paid to any serving officer).

The force’s head of crime, Detective Chief Superintendent Neil Adamson said: “The new operating model has been designed by experienced officers to improve our service and deliver high standards. There will be a reduction in the number of detectives required and some may be redeployed.”

Now call me old fashioned, but if you want the best people for the job it’s probably not a good idea to pick names from a hat because unless every single one of the applicants are all of equally outstanding merit, you risk getting a set of detectives which includes the worst as well as the best. Possibly not the best way to deliver ‘high standards’.
