A Window on the World

Posted in The Job - Experience by 200

I was walking back from town today along my usual route. It was getting towards twighlight, that time when people turn on their living room & kitchen lights but don’t close the curtains yet. where you cans ee right in & check out whether they have the Christmas decorations up yet, what size their TV is or what their taste in art is on the living room walls.

I love it. I don’t know whether it’s being naturally curious or just plain nosey but it always fascinates me how other people live.

I used to love going to alarms when I was on the street. While a lot of officers would turn up, give the outside a quick security check & then bugger off, I always tried to wait until the keyholder got there. Not because I wanted to make sure 100% that the place hadn’t been broken into & that Billy Burglar wasn’t hiding under a desk, but because I wanted to have a good nose round.

I’ve covered some really posh estates or high-class villages in my time. Some of the houses where beyond the wildest dreams of anyone except a multi-millionaire. I loved going in & checking out how the other half lived. It made a real pleasant change from some of the less salubrious properties that we visit more frequently. The ones where you have to wipe your feet on the way out, literally, because there is more dog mess on the kitchen & living room park than there is on the entire local park, where rubbish & clothes are piled from floor to ceiling & where you can’t see the sink for weeks old dishes.

It’s interesting seeing the different approaches to the way people furnish & decorate their houses, especially when money is no object. I guess it’s the old envy instinct, the idle dream that one day it just might be possible to reach the same levels, provided I either by a lottery ticket or write a blockbuster children’s novel.

It’s one of the few things I miss about proper policing.
