Sue the bastards

Four officers have been stabbed during an incident in London this morning.

A 32-year old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. It follows an incident in which a man threatened officers with a broken light strip before making off. He was chased in and out of shops, threw objects at the officers and smashed a police car window with a brick. He then ran into a butcher’s shop where he grabbed a 12-inch knife and stabbed one officer in the stomach, another in the arm, a third in the leg and inflicted slash wounds to a fourth.

The officers were unarmed. I’m guessing they didn’t have a Taser between them either√ā¬†since√ā¬†the previous Met Commissioner refused to issue non-firearms officers, despite most other forces in the country issuing them to at least a proportion of each front line shift.

Personally, I think that whether they had Taser or not is a moot point. The violent scum that did this should have been shot the moment he picked up a knife. Of course, the chances of that happening are pretty remote in most areas of the country who have to wait for tens of minutes at the barest minimum for a firearms officer to arrive. When incidents of this happen you want a firearm within a couple of seconds not one that is 40 miles across the other side of the county.

The new√ā¬†Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Bernard Hogan-Howe said: “It was shocking that on a hopefully quiet Saturday morning in a London residential area we had such a terrible incident.√ā¬†It just shows the difficult job that police officers do.”

Let’s see if Hogan-Howe puts his money with his mouth is and does something to give Met officers the protection they deserve. Personally, I hope the injured officers use the Federation sue the arse off him and his predecessor for refusing to√ā¬†supply√ā¬†a suitable level of personal protection equipment.

I hope the officers make a full and speedy recovery.

The thing is, we shouldn’t have “terrible incidents” and police officers shouldn’t have such a “difficult job”. The implementation of law and order does not require a fair fight between cops and robbers – it demands an unfair fight, where criminals can be captured and dealt with in the easiest possible fashion. Every copper in this country is armed – all with pistols and many with tasers. It’s high time you lot did the same. The people who should be lying on the street, bleeding, are the crooks – not the cops. I hope the officers make a full recovery, and by the time they do, I hope you’re all being started on your firearms inductions course.

In this day and age, it is quite insane to send police officers – who are the ones everyone else falls back on – unequipped to handle the situation.

I agree, he should have been shot. And while that debate takes places, I see no sane reason why every officer isn’t equipped with Taser. How many people do you see lining up to show that taser is safe by having it used on them, vs a baton strike? It makes much more sense to stun someone at a slight distance, than to close it and whack them with a metal stick… while they try to stab you…

Compare the number of knife attacks on Mainland officers against the number of attacks on (Armed) police in Northern Ireland.

I had a guy produce a large chefs knife and raise it as if he was about to charge me.
The sound of one of my colleagues “Crashing the slide” of a Ruger Mini 14 rifle persuaded him that it would be wise to drop the knife.

It has been many many years since a policeman in NI has been stabbed.
The criminals know that Police would be A totally justified and B prepared to respond with firearms.
