Forked Tongues

"Tough on Crime, tough on the causes of crime".

Wasn’t this the trumpet-blast of the nu-Labour Government a while ago. What a great soundbite, it’s shame that evidence in the actuality of the theory seems somewhat lacking.

Apparently, there is a knife-crime every 24 minutes in the UK. In a recent three-month period there were 55 knife-related murders, over 2,000 stabbings & 2,500 knifepoint muggings.

You can’t switch on the TV these days without there being another teenage knife murder.

In answer to this appalling situation  the government changed the law & doubled the maximum sentence for knife possession to 4 years. More than 6,000 people have been sentenced under the new guidelines but just TWO people have received the maximum sentence (presumably they only served 50% of this sentence like most other people)

Of the 6,284 people sentenced for carrying a knife in public, 2,970 received community work.

Well that sends out a message that possession of a knife in public will not be tolerated, eh?

Except where the cause of crime is the government approach to policing. And the NHS. And schools. And social security. And immigration. And anything else they touch. I know I`m cynical but when have you listened to a politician from any side talking about any topic and actual believed what they were saying. I can`t imagine what their real agenda is but the evidence stacks up against it being the best interests of the majority of citizens in this country.

Yes I have had a bad day as it happens.

The legacy of Tony and Alistair was to make it acceptable to spin and lie and never actual change anything for the better. The legacy of the human rights act and all the various pressure groups, who now go well beyond their original remit of ‘fairness for all’, is that nobody in authority dares to say anything even mildy controversial.

For fear of putting a ripple in the mirror smooth image of political correctness, for fear of drawing attention to themselves by daring to be ‘off-message’.

Sensible decision making has been replaced with choosing a defining slogan at the start of your reign then trying to manipulate the facts to meet the promise of the slogan. “Tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime”. Slogan – check, facts manipulated – check, spin and lies to cover own tracks – check, quick exit so someone else picks up the pieces – check. Anyone around even noticed the country is in pieces? Erm…..
