That’s the life for me

I had to do a stint down the call centre this week (or whatever public-friendly name they’re calling it these days).

    I`ve done some reading about call centres and public services. The centres are often thought a great idea, another great idea borrowed from the private sector. But, can you recall the last really positive experience you had trying to get something done and having to go through a call centre?

    The thing is, what are a lot of the calls about? Are a large number of them chasing up something that hasn`t been done, or has been done incorrectly, or is just asking for information that can be had elsewhere?

    Looking at call volumes, and how quickly they are answered, may produce stats that look like the call centre is ‘successful’. But a closer look at the nature of the calls may reveal that the reason there are so many calls is that the system is badly broken elsewhere.
