Music to accompany said video should of course be Simon & Garfunkel’s:

    ‘Slip, sliding away’.

    Unless anyone knows different?

Last Monday I travelled between two sites at work, maybe 2 miles apart. On the way there, the roads seemed OK as they’d had some salt. (Do you remember salt?)

Coming back 90 minutes later, I had no reason to think it would be any different. There had been no snow, and the temperature had risen by a whole degree. I was still taking it steady though, as the sides of the roads still had some snow on them.

I rounded a bend at about 10-11mph as I knew I’d be approaching a T-junction. Sure enough, there was a short queue and I took my foot off the gas and changed down. When down to about 5mph, I gently applied the brake. All that happened was that my right foot got a good kicking from the ABS and I slowed down not a jot!

Luckily there was no traffic coming the other way, and I managed to get enough steerage way to move towards the right hand side of the road before I shunted the car in front. As soon as my wheel crossed the white line, I stopped.

You couldn’t have done it better if you’d tried. All my side of the road was covered in black ice, up to and including the white line. All the other side, from the edge of the line nearly into the gutter was ice-free and dry.

    One lesson quickly learned!
